Finding the newest / latest date in each record

Hi everyone,

I need your help! I have a table that contains names and dates. I need to find the most recent / latest date in each record. For example:

Names Dates
A 01/02/09
A 05/25/09
B 06/09/09
B 07/30/09
B 01/02/09
C 03/09/09
C 02/28/09
D 12/12/09

The results should be:
A 05/25/09
B 07/30/09
C 03/09/09
D 12/12/09

Your help on this is appreciated.

Use a Pivot Table - set Names to be Row Field and Dates to be Data Field set to MAX (apply Custom Number Format to Field of Date)

Thanks for your answer, but I will require a program as I will add more coding into this which why the Pivot is not good enough.

Re: Finding the newest / latest date in each record

Hello statsman,

Here is a macro you can use to check the dates. You can set the source and destination to the same sheet or different sheets. The macro uses the first cell of the range to determine the number of entries. It expects the name to be in the cell to left and the date in the cell immediately to the right. The code is rather long, but the macro is very fast.
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Adding the Macro
1. Copy the macro above pressing the keys CTRL+C
2. Open your workbook
3. Press the keys ALT+F11 to open the Visual Basic Editor
4. Press the keys ALT+I to activate the Insert menu
5. Press M to insert a Standard Module
6. Paste the code by pressing the keys CTRL+V
7. Make any custom changes to the macro if needed at this time.
8. Save the Macro by pressing the keys CTRL+S
9. Press the keys ALT+Q to exit the Editor, and return to Excel.

To Run the Macro...
To run the macro from Excel, open the workbook, and press ALT+F8 to display the Run Macro Dialog. Double Click the macro's name to Run it.
Sincerely,
Leith Ross

Remember To Do the Following....

1. Use code tags. Place
before the first line of code and
after the last line of code.
