    Smile Allocation of a number to a range class

    My fist post so please excuse my lack of knowledge of how to articulate.

    Within excel 2003 I wish to write a formular that I think would be nested? I am unsure of the format.

    I would like to allocate a class identifyer to a number if it falls within any one of the following. (1) 0 to 9.99, (2) 10 to 19.99, (3) 20 to 29.99, (4) 30 to 39.99, (5) 40 to 49.99, (6) 50 to 59.99. The numbers in brackets would be the identifyer for which class range the number falls into. For example 23 would be class (3), 41 would be class (5).

    The forumal needs an IF function I believe that can be extended to include all ranges so that the identifyer is provided within the cell regardless of what number I enter.

    Any assistance would be much apreciated.

    Regards Ken

    Re: How to write a formula for this question

    If the intervals are really batches of 10

    =IF(OR(A1<=0,A1>=60),"",-(1+INT(A1/10)))
    use Custom Formatting to display as (#) - eg #;(#);0;@

    If you had "uneven" batches then

    =LOOKUP(SUM(A1),{-9.99E+307,0,10,20,30,40,50,60},{"",-1,-2,-3,-4,-5,-6,""})
    same custom format as above
    modify the values in the 2nd vector as required per your intervals

    Your post does not comply with Rule 1 of our Forum RULES. Your post title should accurately and concisely describe your problem, not your anticipated solution. Use terms appropriate to a Google search. Poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice will be addressed according to the OP's experience in the forum: If you have less than 10 posts, expect (and respond to) a request to change your thread title. If you have 10 or more posts, expect your post to be locked, so you can start a new thread with an appropriate title.
    To change a Title on your post, click EDIT then Go Advanced and change your title, if 2 days have passed ask a moderator to do it for you.
    Hope that helps.
