    Random pairing

I am a teacher and want to randomly assign pairs of students to different stations in class. There are 24 students in a class and 12 different stations. The students work at a station for a number of classes then rotate. How do I guarantee each student is assigned a new partner that he has not been paired with while simultaniously assigning them to a station that neither has been at? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.

One simple way is like a duplicate bridge movement.

    Start with 1 & 13 at sta 1, 2 & 14 at sta 2, ... 12 and 24 at sta 12.

And the end of each day, students 1-12 move to the next higher station, and 13-24 move to the next lower.

Thanks SHG. That is actually how we do it now. My problem arises when I'm forced to break the pattern for any reason; perhaps 2 students aren't allowed to work together, etc. I want a way to still pair up previously unpaired individuals at a station they haven't been at without doing it manually.

If two students can't work together, have them in the same group -- 1-12 or 13-24.

There are ways to complicate this, but I'm not hearing a good reason to do so so far.
