Conditional formating based on cell value to left

    Hi all

I'm trying to create a conditional formating rule that tells me if a cell is either less than or greater than a cell value to it's left. It's easy if I want to check against an absolute value (is B2 less than 9 say) but can't seem to get it to be relative to the row it's on. Here's an example:

    1) 2 3
    2) 7 3
    3) 2 9
    4) 4 7

The formating will apply to column B (3,3,9,7) and simply checks to see if the cell to it's left, Column A (2,7,2,4), is greater than or less than itself. In the above example row 2 would be say green because 3 is less than 7, all the other rows would be say Red.

If I use the 'formula' option, e.g. $B1<$A1 as soon as I try to expand this to include the other rows it still references A1, not A17, A267 etc. I'm sure I'm missing something really simply so if you can help I'd be greatful.

    Hi Brelin,

I hope you have 2007 or 2010 excel as my attached is from the newer versions. Please update your profile so we can tell which version you have and will determine if the answer is appropriate for your version.

The answer is you need to edit the rule and change where the rule applies. See the attached.

Change some of the numbers to confirm the rule works as you need.
