if col A text = 'x' then sum col B in another cell

thanks in advance for any tips

seems like this should be easy, but i don't know how to phrase the ? to look up help.

    col A col B
    apples 3
    oranges 2
    apples 4
    apples 3
    oranges 7

i would like to have a cell run a function that keeps a tally of col B based on items in col A. if col A= "oranges" then add col B to a running tally.

    so in example above,
    [apples total] [10]
    [oranges total] [9]

If you had the word "apples" in cell D1, then this formula in E1:

    =SUMIF(A:A, D1, B:B)
