    VBA, .Net

I have a question(s) and don't really know where to post it on this forum. First, a smidge of background.

I am a 2nd year student at a local university and my major is in Information Systems. I found work this summer in my field of study in that, among other tasks, I am to make the data collection process more efficient and effective for the user. In my quest to seek knowledge about how to do a lot of my tasks, I came across a guy that suggested I use ".Net" to perform all my Windows tasks. He gave me a huge book to look at and at the time, it was very confusing because it was for advanced programmers. Now I have some experience and the book isn't as daunting to read (although sections still make no sense to me). What I want to know is:
Can .Net be used to code Excel?
If so, am I wasting my time using VBA?
Heck, for that matter, is VBA pretty much the same as .Net?

    What do you think?
