vbNewLine creates questions mark in box

I have a macro that I'm trying to make do the equivalent of hitting alt+enter, so that I can create a list within a cell.

    When I use:

It creates the newline, but on the previous line it shows a question mark in a box.

If I use alt+enter this doesn't happen. Any ideas? I've tried switching the field to text, but that doesn't work.
