    colour coding cells

I am trying to colour code a cell if they are both of the same value.

ie: if cell j2 is the same as cell k2 then colour cell j2 red.

ie if cell j2 is 4 and cell k2 is 4 then colour cell j2 red

    can this be done ?

    Try this:
Select J2 - click Conditional formatting in the Home ribbon - New rule - Use a formula to determine ... - enter this as the formula

    =$K$2=$J$2

select a format (by clicking the format button) and hit OK.

    cheers

    Re: colour codeing cells

$K$2 makes the cell reference abosolute. K2 is relative; it will change relation to where you copy and paste it. $K$2 is absolute; it will always point to cell K2 even when you copy an paste it in another location.

    Re: colour coding cells

Starting with Teylyn's answer select cells k5 to k23 and enter the conditional formatting as

    =$K5=$J5

    and follow the described way

ok can't get this to work this is what i am trying to do.It's a golf score card and in one column i have the pars and the other columns i input there score when there score = the par I want it to turn red.I am able to do it cell by cell in conditional formatting but there are 9 games a month which means i have to do 9 times 18 cells(162cells) Individually per player is there a quicker way of doing this?

    Re: colour coding cells

I really don't understand why OPs are reluctant to post a sample workbook.
I see this all the time where there are 10 or more messages back and forth while everyone's trying to clarify and explain and nothing gets resolved.
Eventually someone will suggest to post a sample workbook and the problem gets resolved quickly thereafter.

gazza uk: Post a sample workbook to get faster resolution.

Thanks Gos-c i managed to work out how to do it column by column by draging the curser down from say k2 to k20 but when i try to do more than 1 column it just turns the selected cells red so it took me a bit longer but job done many thanks gazza
