how to create combination from multiple variables

need to make a make combinations of variables from a list of data: for instance items 1,2, and 3 each have a qty of 12,000 in addition they dont have additional colors exceeding a total of 7. See diagram 1 of how they would be grouped togeather. Items 4 and 11 cannot run togeather due to total colors between the two exceeding 7. Items 7 and 8 can run togeather see diagram 2. Items 8 and 9 colors total max of 6 but if you combined them the total of times you would have to run item 9 is 22 and for item 8 is 21 (a difference of one to three is acceptable. But basicly I need an easy way to group these items without having to manually break them out and calculate every time any ideas

Re: how to create combination from multiple variables

    Hello chris
Sorry I don't understand why item 8 can run 6 times 7 can run 3 times etc, also what did you mean, "on a single sheet".
I have to go to work now, if its hasn't been solved by tonight, i'll have another look, but hopefully someone can answer earlier.
    Regards
    Peter

Re: how to create combination from multiple variables

My appologies Peter, what i meant to say was Item 6 can run 6 times and item 5 can run3 times. Item six with a qty of 72,000 will fit 6 times on a single sheet, item five with a qty of of 36,000 will fit 3 times on a single sheet. I run a printing press, imagine 1 sheet going through at a time first it get color then it is cut. I am trying to fit as many as possible on one sheet. For instance it doesnt make since to make a straight run of 72,000 "if I could fit nine items on one sheet it would take 8,000 sheets to make 72,000. Same thing for a qty of 36,000 if I can fit 9 items on a sheet I would have to run 4,000 sheets before I reached 36,000. Instead I can combine them to maximize a big run at 12,000 sheets. This is just a small example. When you have several different qtys it becomes time consuming to group them. First I have to sort by colors. I cant go over 7 colors on sheet. For instance Item 4 has a qty of 12k, it has 7 colors so the only thing I could pair it with is item 3, 6, or 7 becuase they contain 4 colors only. I updated the file mabye it will help.....thank you so much for responding this isnt the easiest thing in the world to accomplish becuase there are so many factors your help is greatly appreciated.

You seem to be assuming rather a lot of knowledge on our part! I can't really make head nor tail of your problem - which may be me - but maybe you need to simplify it a little, go back to basics, specify your initial assumptions and what you want to achieve.

On the other hand someone who better understands your problem may come by any minute.

Re: how to create combination from multiple variables

    Sorry I still don't understand
Item six with a qty of 72,000 will fit 6 times on a single sheet, item five with a qty of of 36,000 will fit 3 times on a single sheet.
Same thing for a qty of 36,000 if I can fit 9 items on a sheet

The first line says 72000 x 6 =432000 will fit on one sheet.432000 whats, and 36000x3=108000.
why if 36000 is smaller why can less fit on a page.
Then it says 36000x9=315000 will fit on one sheet.
How is the size of the item determined? What is the max capacity of a sheet, I assume a sheet of paper!
    I'm obviously missing something sorry.
    Regards
    Peter
