    Calculation Inconsistency

    Recently, I've been having trouble with simple math in Excel.

    Sample:

    A1= 50
    B1= 20
    C1= 40

    Formula in Cell D1:

    Cell D1, in this example, should read --- L

    Here's my problem...

    Sometimes the formula works...sometimes it doesn't.

    Has anybody else had a similar problem??
    Or...Is my Excel program broken??

    A small workbook is attached to illustrate this quirky behavior.
    Somebody please open the workbook and see if Excel calculates the formulas correctly for you.

    Also attached is a bitmap showing how MY worksheet looks when opened:
    Is that data consistent with your worksheet??

    If not, then it must be my Excel program. How do I fix it??

    Re: Calculation Nightmare

    First, could you please change "Nightmare" to "Inconsistency" in your title ?

    The issue is your values in F are numbers stored as text ... text > numbers (always)

    Alternative (which will coerce F)

    I figured it was something like that...but I couldn't figure out how the numbers were text, rather than numbers.

    Then I realized that the numbers were coming from scores pasted from a website.
    I manually entered each of the scores on that worksheet...and my formulas worked....!!!

    Thanks Donkey Ote...for steering me in the right direction.
    I will write VBA to convert all the data on that worksheet to number format after it is pasted. That should solve my problem.
