Code runs slow until I bring some other app to foreground

I have a sheet with a big table. The table values change per some VBA code, which usually runs for 30-120 seconds, or until conditions are met in the table. I have a bar graph that continuously reflects the values in the table.

The whole thing runs slow but acceptable until I click on something else down in my taskbar (Google Chrome, e.g.) and then click Excel again. THEN it runs like gangbusters, graph and all. Anyone know how to make it run fast all the time? Does this mean the problem is not in my code?

I'm turning off screen updating at the beginning of execution and then on/off in the middle of some loop to update the graph. Don't know if that helps. Thanks all!

this question is difficult to answer without sample book and a code itself
