Reducing a name list on typing

Hi all,
I have a large number of students (name code used to be identified) and at the beginning of their work now they choose their name from a cell with validation referring to a list.
(Excel Data Validation List) However there are many wrong choices, because the total number of members is as high as 500.
I should like to use a list-roll down combined with typing.
I suppose the user types "A" and a sub-list appears with names beginning with "A"
If the typed second character is "b" then the list should be reduced to those where the name starts with "Ab" and so on vallowing the user to choose his/her name now from a short list.

Is it possible?
