Excel To Word document via XML

    Scope:
With data in an Excel Spreadsheet, populate fields in a Word Document.

I have many reasons that I think xml is the method, if it can be done without too much heartache.
The biggest reason is that I will have a need to populate a variety of unique documents with similar data, depicted in different ways.
My thoughts are that mapping the data with some XML strategy might be the best way. I am open to suggestions. I use VBA on a daily basis. I am looking for a "low hanging fruit" implementation.

I am new to the "open xml" concepts. If my understanding is correct, A schema would have to be created for both documents. then a mapping of the schemas, then the code to perform the task.
If this is possible, is there a conceptual overview of the process (tools, utilities, functions) that someone can provide?

    thanks,
    Wayne
