query within vlookup table aray to retrive left 6

Excel 2007.
& attempting vlook up on on column of a sheet, retriveing from another column of another sheet.

As I am doing a vlook up, from a column of a sheet, to retrive data from another sheet, & just need it to retrieve the 1st 6 characters found. (Numberric, not alpha).
Is this possible?

My example is:

=VLOOKUP(Q3,'[qhery sheet.xls]TFP task in NY, Oh or Pa'!$B$3=LEFT(B3,6),1,FALSE)

When I run this, it gets # na in the complete column.
