Excel features mysteriously no longer working

I'm perplexed. Today as I was working on my workbook, I noticed that the copy function was acting quirky. Normally, I could copy with CTRL-c, and repeatedly paste with CTRL-v. Now, I can only paste once. For a while, it was also pasting values, not the formula itself.

Now, I'm noticing that the "undo" function is no longer working.

Has anybody seen this sort of thing before?? More importantly, has anybody got a suggestion as to how I fix it?

    Thanks!

    Hi Gordon,

I'd replace the batteries in my wireless keyboard. (note - this is a wild *** guess )

    Further observations:
'Undo' turns on when I'm typing information into a cell, but as soon as I hit enter to complete the entry. It turns off again.

When I start a new spreadsheet, 'Undo' works again.

Good thought, but I'm running on a laptop :-)

It's not just that CTRL-Z doesn't work, the whole undo icon (that curvy arrow to the left) greys out...

I had a file that did the same sort of things you are speaking of. But it was only one file and I also could no longer use the paste formula option, it would paste the same address as the original cell and when auto filling it acted like the range was locked when it was not. Unfortunately I did not find a solution and I could not live without those features so I made a whole new workbook and re-entered the data. As copying sheets and moving to the new workbook keep that funky formatting. That was on Office 2007 BTW. I upgraded to 2010 and that file worked fine, just for your info. (I had to keep the original file for tax purposes)

My laptop's Enter and Space keys stopped working last week. I blew the keyboard out with canned air. I think I had dust or food or stuff stuck between the keys. I even turned it upside down and squirted air on it. It works fine now.

Sigh...recently updated to Office2010 Professional, so apparently the ghost is still around...

Do you think that copying and pasting data into an intermediate program (i.e., pasting into word as unformatted text) would work as well?
Also, would I need to retype all the macros, or could I cut and paste? And now that I think on it, it's also full of semicomplex formulas and conditional formatting....oy...

Re: Excel features mysteriously no longer working

OK, spent a few hours doing some more digging, and I have some more leads...

According to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/o...d-e3aa5066ca57 (down in the discussion portion), there are a variety of possible causes.

I looked at the registry option, but decided against mucking around there until I had no other choice. My workbook does, however, have a worksheet_change event on the sheet in question. I removed the entirety of the code, and I now have my undo and multiple CTRL-v pasting ability back!!!

Curiously, though, I had called some macros within a worksheet_change event before this all happened. I added a few more into the mix today, though. Perhaps there is some sort of limit in the works?

Anyway, I think I'll keep this thread alive and keep reporting progress as I find it...

Re: Excel features mysteriously no longer working

I think the problem came to light because of the complexity of the macros. On the main page (where I'm calling the macros), when a single value changes, the sheet goes through and recalculates dozens (or even hundreds) of individual values across multiple sheets, often in an iterative manner, changing one cell at a time. This (I think) owverwhlems the undo function.

So, I now have some other questions, which means some new posts to the forum

    Thanks again!

Re: Excel features mysteriously no longer working

Once a macro makes any change to the environment (changing a cell is most common, but most anything else as well) the undo stack gets flushed. This is not new behavior.
