    Excel web browser interactivity

Can anyone offer thoughts and information about uploading Excel sheets to a browser, preferably with interactivity, and even better if macros can in some way be made available.

I've been surprised to see that the ability to create a web page from Excel has apparently been removed from XL 2007/2010. It's still available in 2003 albeit with apparently very limited Excel functionality, (i.e. sorting, filtering, adding formulae - not sure whether all types are allowed), and that's about it. Macros don't seem to feature at all.

So I'm looking to learn a bit more about this. I've heard Sharepoint is an option - (exactly what is Sharepoint in this context?) and apparently GoogleDocs has some sort of similar functionality.

Any information will be gratefully received.

    Usual TIA

    Re: Excel web browser interactivity

I have used Google docs. You can upload a file and then open it on your system and make updates. You can share the same file with others and they too can make updates to the file. However, it does not have many functionalities. Its not as flexible as excel is independently and i dont think you can run macros on these files. You can do basic excel stuff like sorting, filtering, coloring, formulae, etc.

However, if you have downloaded the file and made changes to it and then want to upload it again, once you upload it, you need to re-share it with the people whom you shared it with earlier. It works as a new file being uploaded. It does not over-write the previous file.

When it comes to sharepoint, its more flexible. You can download / check-out the file at your end, make changes and save it. If you choose to download it, you can make changes and upload again. It gives you the option of over-writing the previous file. If you choose to check-out (which means makes changes in live mode), the other users get to see your name there so they know its checked out to you and you are making changes. You do not need to share the file to the other users. You just provide the link and they can access the file.

    Re: Excel web browser interactivity

    Hello Arlu

Many thanks for the prompt response.

The users don't need to add anything or be able to save the file, but I would have liked them to be able to click a button to toggle a macro which would toggle a change in the range covered by a chart.

I don't know much about sharepoint, well to be strictly accurate zilch!. What is is it? Software, an environment, a virtual space a browser view or what? Would it allow macros to work with a workbook?

    Regards

    Re: Excel web browser interactivity

    Hi Richard,

I use Sharepoint for a slightly different reason. The firewall here at work blocks direct access to DropBox and I want to share my files with my home computer. So I just share the whole folder (including Excel Workbooks). At home I can have full access to all files, can manipulate them and save them. When I open them on the other computer then they are all updated. I believe you can also limit the functionality to just read-only, etc.

Another option might the new Web Apps that are available for Office 2010. You can upload the files to it, make changes, save it, etc. but no macros and other functionalities are disallowed.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks abbousetta,

That's more interesting information. So what is Sharepoint exactly? Is it software, do you need to buy licences etc...?

    Re: Excel web browser interactivity

Not an expert on the matter, but I know there are different products (Sharepoint server, SharePoint Workspace, etc.). I got Workspace installed with Office 2010. Here at work we are still using Windows XP and I noticed that the icon appears inside the Office group of programs and others don't. Even so, I was able to find it on the top of all the folders. The Icon should read "Folder Sync" and have a big "S" in it (just like Excel has the big "E"). After adding a folder, I sent myself a request to share and took it from there. This is the official bit from MS (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../ee649102.aspx). Let me know if you want to take it for a test-run. I can set up a dummy folder with dummy files and send you a request.
