if C1 is unlocked, A1 must change color. I'm made few unsuccessful attempts by using

    what am I doing wrong??

    Hello var,

I had no problem applying your format condition as written. Perhaps you should post your workbook.
    Sincerely,

    Hello var,

It worked as you wrote it in my Excel 2003 workbook.
    1. Are you doing a lot of calculations with formulas?
    2. Is calculation mode set to automatic?
    3. Is the worksheet protected?
