Automatically enter date into a column and make that column read only

    Hi Everyone,

I have a date column in my spreadsheet and there are several actions that I would like to apply to it -

1). Auto populate the date column with the current date only when the column to the left has data entered into it (please see below)

    Date-Entry.jpg

2). Make the date column read only so that it cannot be modified by other parties.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    Davo

    Hello Mr. Davo,

That can be done with sheet protection, but if Data in the Column to the left of the Locked Column is changed the Date and Time in the Locked Column would adjust automatically.

    Is that O.K. with you?

That will be fine. Can you please send me a link that explains sheet protection?

    Hello Mr. Davo,

See the attached WorkBook, it is quite self explanatory.

Re: Automatically enter date into a column and make that column read only

    Hello Winon,

Thank you very much for your response. I have noticed in the Protect Column.xls file which you generously supplied that every time a change occurs in the left column (e.g.: each time I add a new letter in the screen capture below), that all dates / times update for every letter that has been entered previously -

Is there any way of "disconnecting" each row, such that only one date / time gets updated whenever a new item is entered, or an existing item is altered?

Any further assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind Regards,

    Davo

    Hi Mr. Davo,

I am quite tied up at the moment, but I promise to have a look into this as soon as I have time.

We may have to resort to VBA. is that O.K. with you to run Code with this project, and could it effect other users?

    Hi Winon,

Thanks so much for your help with this. My intention is to deploy the spreadsheet to SharePoint Online - it is to be accessed across several states. As I am not familiar with VBA I would not like to see you put in a lot of time only to discover that it won't work with SharePoint / Office 365. Can you please point me in the right direction to learn more about the direction that your suggesting? I will then be able to decide whether what I am trying to achieve is worth pursuing or not.

    Kind Regards,

    Davo
