fetching data from search results from a website using cell contents?

Hi there

Apologies if I don't explain this well, its 1am here and I'm a bit tired, but I thought I'd get this posted before I go to bed...

Basically I do some updating of a football game (like transfers and stuff), and I have a list of players in an excel sheet, for example, in my sheet I have the name of the player, and I want to be able to fetch information from a particular website (transfermarkt) about which team the player players for.

So for example, column C is the players name "Gilberto Martínez" (without the quotes) and Column B is the player's FULL name Gilberto Martínez Vidal (as there is more than one Gilberto Martinez you can search the full name on Transfermarkt's search engine to bring up the specific one you want)

Column X is the 'Team Name' - I want to be able to automatically do a search on the 'Transfermarkt' website using either column B or Column C and then pull the team name for where that player is playing now.

On the Transfermarkt website there is a search engine in the top left corner, I pasted Gilberto Martinez Vidal in the search and this is the output url & page:-

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/gi...eler_5969.html

the url is consistent except the player name and the number after spieler (spieler is german for player)
so the pages would be like http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/*-...spieler_*.html for each one.

Another example is:- http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/li...ler_28003.html

I just wondered if it will be really difficult to set something up to pull the club name (in this case he doesnt have a club so I want excel to put into Column X the 'Unemployed' text

I'm guessing it would be very difficult because of the numbers after the spieler_ part of the url, as they are different for each player?

Really sorry I've not explained this very well, just wondered how difficult it would be to implement something like this.

I should point out that I am using Excel 2010.

Thank you!

i am a little confused about what you are trying to achive. also, many members here are reluctant (or unable) to go to web sites like you posted.

that said, would it be possible to post a workbook, showing what you are working with, what you want, and how you arrived at that?

To Attach a File:

1. Click on Go Advanced
2. In the frame Attach Files you will see the button Manage Attachments
3. Click the button.
4. A new window will open titled Manage Attachments - Excel Forum.
5. Click the Browse... button to locate your file for uploading.
6. This will open a new window File Upload.
7. Once you have located the file to upload click the Open button. This window will close.
8. You are now back in the Manage Attachments - Excel Forum window.
9. Click the Upload button and wait until the file has uploaded.
10. Close the window and then click Submit.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Hiya

Transfermarkt is basically a site with a huge database of all football teams around the world and a list of players who play for these teams, and statistics like the players age, height, weight, and so on. It's one of the most well-known football statistic sites on the internet

No problem, I'll get the workbook posted up!

Here you go!

In the spreadsheet is a list of all the players, the 'Column W' is the team as per the computer game, but it's out of date, so for example 'Abdoul Camara' might not be playing for FC Sochaux-Montbeliard anymore, so I want to be able to auto-search Abdoul Camara on Transfermarkt, and then the team result gets put the in Column X row 16 cell.

Sorry again, it's really late here and I'm half-asleep

oh ok, so you want some way for that workbook to access that website and cross-check name/team references. if that is what you want, then sorry, i have no clue on how that would be done (doesnt mean it cant be, some1 with really thick glasses on here could probably do it)

if on the other hand, you can download or copy/paste the results of that web site into an excel workbook, then it would probably be pretty easy to get what you want

Alright, thanks for replying FDibbins, yeah i would rather get the results for the specific players than just download all the data. Thank you anyhow
