    Syntax for .FormulaR1C1 with Variables

I have a report that brings the percent of active files to the next available row (LR) in each agent's column. I am trying to find the average of the multiple cells in row LR. Angela's column is column "D" and Kim's is column "E". The following code brings up the equation: =AVERAGE($3:$3 $D:$D, $3:$3 $E:$E), but I am looking for =AVERAGE(D3, E3). Where am I going wrong? Thank you.
