    Data Validation (comma separated cells)

    Here is my problem.
I have a spreadsheet with a column that allows multiple categories to be selected from a drop down list, for each cell. Each category within that cell is separated by commas, and I've not set a limit to the amount of categories selected at this time. In row #1 I have set the data filter to appear, allowing for a rough form of searching. What I can't seem to figure out is, how can I get the data filter to recognize that I want each category that is separated by a comma to appear as it's own selectable field when using the data filter function? Is it even doable? Any assistance in this would be very much appreciated.

    Hi,

I don't believe it's possible using standard data filtering which uses the complete text of a cell for the basis of its filtering. You could use the Text filter with the 'Contains' option and enter text but I guess that's not quite what you have in mind.

No doubt a macro could be written to create a criteria range from the constituent parts of a selection and then drive a Data Filter Advanced, but that seems a bit clunky and messy.

But tell me why you need to have the drop down values combined in the way you do. It's quite an unusual way of using the validation functionality, and as you know it needs a macro to do it?

What's the overall end goal here. There may be a simpler way of achieving it if we can understand your whole process rather than what appears to be a subset.
