Hi,
Right, so I'd not say I'm fantastic when it comes to working with Excel, but I do have a decent grounding, both from school and work. However, as of late I've been mostly using Excel to help facilitate the running of forum games, keeping track of player actions and economies. However, as of late I've been pondering whether it might be possible to in some fashion automate a lot of the actions that up till now I've been doing by hand. Now earlier this week I read an article about someone who had essentially created an entire game in Excel (Link) and this led me to pondering whether I could try something similar, albeit with far less complex scope in mind.
However, before jumping in head first I felt it might be prudent to ask people who know Excel an awful lot better than I do whether what I want to be able to do is even possible using macros and potentially VB, or whether it might be simpler in the long run to finally bite the bullet and learn Java and/or a better suited coding language.
Effectively what I need to do is create a spreadsheet which stores player economic data in a similar vein (though probably simplified a fair deal to start with) as shown in this spreadsheet. But also keeps track of turns being processed, so that when a new turn begins all income is added and upkeep subtracted automatically from the players stockpiles. Further to that, and perhaps somewhat more complex would be a means of letting the player/admin actually build new structures via the spreadsheet, ideally by having players create build orders that the sheet processes once the turn is ended. Including having new buildings being added a varying number of turns after they're ordered to account for building times.
Any advice as to whether this is at all possible would be most welcome!
