Assign hashtag system to insert hyperlink?

    Hi everyone,

I'm trying to develop a workbook to assist in performance measurement and need a bit of help. I know that one can insert hyperlinks fairly easily by simply copying a cell and pasting it as a hyperlink through the clipboard, but I was wondering if it might be possible to assign a key or set of key strokes to perform this function instead. Ideally I'd like to create something akin to a hashtag system, or the previous method of tagging someone in a post on Facebook; enter a special symbol (#, @, etc.) into one cell, then click on the cell to which you want it linked, hit enter and be done. I'm trying to make this function as user friendly as possible for others using the workbook, so I'd like to avoid having to copy, paste, or any other steps. I've tried using Ctrl+K, but it keeps prompting me to select a file, which I'd like to avoid. This would all be contained within the one workbook, so there would be no need to worry about hyperlinking to other files.

I assume it must be possible to do this manually, record the macro and then simply assign the macro to a particular key, but I'm not certain as to how precisely this might be accomplished. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

The hyperlink dialog has the Place in Document option. Can you not use that?

just use the hyperlink function =hyperlink()

if you really want to shorten it you could create a custom function that calls the hyperlink and call it H or something, you can't use things like # as a function name though.

It's possible to select a cell using the Place in Document option, but not possible to assign a shortcut or function key. As well, the other people who would be using this workbook are not exactly tech-savvy. I know that if they're required to type out a specific cell reference rather than just click on it, things will go wrong.

Thinking about it, you can't put a custom funcion h() which does the same as =hyperlink(), so you would have to have an empty function h() and then have a worksheet_change event that looks for you typing your function, in order for it to be unique enough for it to not be called accidentally, you would probably be no better than with the =hyperlink() function.
