sum up the activity by the reason

I have to do a lot of accounting where I type up bank statements and then have to sum up the activity by the reason. I was wondering if there is a way I can make a macros that will sum how much is under each category. I know that I can do If cell (i,2) is "Taxes"... but there is always a different category so I was wondering if there is a way for the macros to detect the different categories and sum them on the next workbook.
I made an example of what I would like the macros to do attached

    Thanks!

Re: sum up the activity by the reason

I think this would be a better title?

Looking at your file, on sheet2, you seem to have a summary of values from sheet1. However, some of the values dont match?

On sheet2 how do you arrive at...
    Paycheck...80
    Loans........-270

    when on sheet1 you have...
    Loans........$250.00
    Paycheck...$60.00
    Loans ........$30.00
    Paycheck....$40.00

You can use this to get the values you want...
    =SUMIF(Sheet1!$B$4:$B$10,Sheet2!B3,Sheet1!$C$4:$C$10)+SUMIF(Sheet1!$B$4:$B$10,Sheet2!B3,Sheet1!$D$4:$D$10)
