Split cell contents into multiple cells

    Hi, folks:

I've been banging my head against this for a few days, so I'm really hoping I can find some help here. I have a large worksheet exported from another application. Because of the way that application does the export, a bunch of stuff is crammed into a single cell -- I need to split the crammed-together stuff into individual cells, and shift everything else down to accommodate the new text so that every item is in its own row (see images). I have control over the contents of the export (though evidently not the format), so I have the option of inserting a character string between the offending lines and performing an operation on it in Excel, if that's helpful.

I'm not entirely certain I'm explaining this very welll; I'd be happy to provide more details if need be. Thank you in advance for any assistance. I have several thousand records I need to reformat, and I'll need to do it many more times in the future -- so some way to automate the process would make my life much easier.

    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Try this:

TIP: If you can take and post BEFORE and AFTER pictures of a sample data workbook, you can attach the workbook itself and save helpers some time trying to help you.

Thank you for this! I had to do a little tweaking to accommodate my specific data, but this has got me much closer than I was. I really appreciate you taking the time to help.

And I apologize for not attaching the actual workbook. The data I'm working with are proprietary, and I think my employer might be less than pleased with me if I posted it to the internet. Unless you were referring to not posting the sample workbook (and not just pictures of it), in which case that was just a bonehead move on my part. So I suppose I apologize either way.

    Thanks again!

It shouldn't take more than a minute or two to replace proprietary data with junk data, certainly worth the effort to help us help you.

If that takes care of your original question, please select Thread Tools from the menu link above and mark this thread as SOLVED. Thanks.
