Fomatting cells (background colour)depending on content of another cell

I have used Data Validation to select one of 6 choices from a list, is there any way to automatically change the Fill Colour of this cell and the 5 or 6 cells immediately below.
I.e. depending on what is selected from the drop menu defines the Fill colour below

You don't need VBA for this. Use Conditional Formatting.

you could use conditional formatting depending on the cell's value eg if the cell is A5, select conditional formatting > new rule > use a frmula to determine ....

type this as the formula
=A5=1

then select th format you want when the value "1" is returned. Repeat for the other values

Not sure that Conditional Formatting will work for this, as there will be no range for comparison.
I want to force the Fill colour to change in the cells below regardless of content (at this point in time they will be empty), the content will be added by other text inputs later.

I believe that will work. Upload a small sample workbook for testing..

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.
