Counting some of the cells in one column IF the cell in another column is true

I am not sure what formula to use.

I have a spreadsheet that is tracking people attending a trip (see crappy cut and paste below). Each person can be part of one or more groups. I am trying to make a formula that totals by group all the YES people. In the example below, I would be looking for a count of all band members that have said YES, another count of all colorguard members that have said YES, ETC. I tried reading up on pivot tables, but its just not sinking in. Any ideas?
