Need to run macro to check if hyperlinks are valid

I have a large spreadsheet that has thousands of hyperlinks that I would like to check periodically to make sure they are up to date. I have found dozens of examples of VBA code that will do this for me and seemingly very clear instructions on how to do it (for example this), but haven't yet been able to successfully run anything in my spreadsheet. It either doesn't do anything, or I get an error message of a bad file name. I don't know how to use VBA or macros, I just need someone to explain to me step-by-step what to copy and paste where and how exactly to execute the code in the spreadsheet. Thanks.

As all hyperlinks are contained in the connections list, you can test this without a macro very easily.

go to the "Data" tab and select "connections". Within the window that opens, you should see a list of all current links. If you choose to refresh them, you'll see whether they are working or indeed erroneous.

I would advise that you manually select the checks and complete them in batches. Not only will the verification process slow your computer down, but the refresh will stop when it finds and error. It will however update the links checked till that point.

I did unsuccessfully try the connections thing before trying to use a macro. Maybe I should clarify, these are hyperlinks to pages on the internet, using the Hyperlink tool, not the hyperlink formula. In any case, when I go to Connections there is no information listed there.
