MS Excel w/ userform & macros - Receive "Automation error Exception ocurred" message

    Hi forum,

I'm hoping someone out there (smarter than I) can help me resolve an error that users of a .xlsm file I created keep receiving.

The file: the attached .xlsm is an excel file that I created (with some previous help in this forum!) that includes several hidden tabs and a couple of buttons that bring up a userform where study data can be entered & edited.

The error: users of the file have reported receiving the following error messages (see included snapshots). Interestingly, some users have said they are able to use the file appropriately the first time they open it, but then they receive the following errors the second time they attempt to open the file. The error seems to occur after they open up the file, enable macros, then push on the "Open Healthy Steps Database" button from the "Splash" spreadsheet.

Help Needed: any information that someone may have as to why some users are receiving this error would be greatly appreciated.

Additional info: I developed and tested the file using MS Excel 2011 for Mac. I do not receive this error when opening the file on my computer (MS Excel 2011 for Mac; OSX 10.8.4). Users are receiving this error when working with the file in MS Excel 2007, 2010, & 2013 (both using Windows XP & Windows 7). *Disclaimer: All data contained in the attached file is fake & no protected health information is included.

    Hi Doc

I've been unable to duplicate the error using Excel 2007 and Windows XP...sorry...

Re: MS Excel w/ userform & macros - Receive "Automation error Exception ocurred" message

    Hi jaslake,

Thanks for the response. I think I've found a temporary work-around, as it seems if I save the file after opening the .xlsm & enabling macros then the userform will load properly after pressing the "Open Health Steps Database" button without receiving a fatal error... I'm waiting to hear back from some of the users whether this extra step of saving the file fixes the problem for them.

However, I've done some additional research on the "Automation Error" and I'm wondering if it could be related to the MS12-060 update that was released by Microsoft on 8/14/2012. Below are few links that I've been looking at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2687441
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_micro...-ms12-060.aspx

I'll provide an update if the work-around listed above seems to solve the issue, but if anyone else has any information about what could be causing this error it would definitely be appreciated!

    MileHigh_PhD,

Do you have any updates to this problem. I'm having a similar issue with a very intermittent Automation Error.
