Question 2007 not opening XLM file

    Hi Guys,

Have a name.xlm file that was likely created in office 2000. I'm running excel 2007, but when I click on the file I get the error "the file you are trying to open name.XLM is in a different format than specified by the file extension... yada yada... do you want to open the file now?" yes/no/cancel.

I click yes but nothing happens, excel stays blank, doesn't even open a blank worksheet - the program isn't freezing or anything. Removing the error (via regedit as specified by the microsoft tech support) didn't help. I can't edit the XLM file itself as I'm one of only a few running office 2007, it's a common file and most of the users here have office 2000. When I had office 2000 it was no problem to open.

    Any ideas? thanks in advance.

did you mean xlm? the new file extensions are xlsx and xlsm

xlm is a marked up text file. You should be able to see the contents of that in a text editor such as Notepad.

Yes it is an actual *.xlm file.

Text editor won't help much as the file is supposed to act like a contents page to access a number of worksheets.

Bit more info, it is literally a name.xlm: described as a "microsoft office excel 4.0 macro"

    Ah Excel 4 macro, XLM.

Is it just the 1 file causing problems or any .xlm file?

If it's all files could you get a colleague to create a sample test file which you can post here?

Hmm. It's the only file I have access to I'm not aware of any others. I think it's an excel 2007 issue and not the file itself because the file itself opens fine in earlier versions of office (eg office 2000)
