I hit an accidental key or key combo in Excel for Mac 2011 and changed the color and disabled merge cells and maybe other things. The sheet is now a light blue color but when I check, no color is selected. I can't get back to where I was. Help!!!!!

On a PC try Control Z. On a MAC it may be Command Z. Don't use a MAC--so I am unsure. Try googling Excel Undo for MAC.
Look at this link http://www.internet4classrooms.com/e...yboard_mac.htm

I tried undo but was unsuccessful. I need to know what caused the sheet to disable merge and change the color to light blue even though in Format it says there is no color.
Hi, welcome to the forum
This sounds like you have inadvertantly changed a setting in excel, does this happen in any new workbook, or just the current 1? I too dont use mac, but take a look under the settings
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Are there any macros in the workbook?
As an aside some (nay most) of us regard not having merged cells as positively beneficial. They just cause too many problems. You should avoid them at all costs.

Thank you Ford. It does not happen in new workbooks. The problem seems confined to the single workbook i was working on when I accidentally hit a key/s and suddenly the color of the sheet was light blue and the cells that were merged are unmerged and merge is no longer available. I got the color right now but still cannot remerge the previously merged cells nor merge any other cells at all.
I feel like I am wasting your time with something that should be simple. I have copied the information to a new workbook so the problem is not solved but also no longer a problem. I saved the problematic workbook in case anyone can tell what i screwed up — for future reference.
Thanks.
Richard,
I would be happy to avoid cell merging. Is there another way to accomplish the same goal without using the Merge function? I use it mostly for centering title or descriptions across a group of columns.
I did not realize that most Excel users were also PC users. Perhaps my problem is confined to Mac.
If you want to center across, say 4 columns a:D, type the heading in A1, Select A1:D1 Then: Alignment, Horizontal, Center across Selection

Do you by any chance have multiple sheets seletect (group mode)? Right-click on a tab name and select UNGROUP, see if that changes anything?cells that were merged are unmerged and merge is no longer available.
Hi,
There is a Format Cells Alignment 'Center across Selection' option which achieves the same thing as a column merge. It's just a pity Microsoft didn't think about the equivalent for a Center across rows selection.
If you'd like to upload the problematic workbook I'll take a look when I next switch on my Mac. Purely for information I generally prefer the Mac for all sorts of stuff, the one exception being Excel. I've always found the Mac version just too much hassle. The VBA editor is nowhere near as user friendly IMO and the VB syntax is often subtly different which makes maintaining Excel stuff that different users of the same workbook want to use across Windows and OSX a real pain. And sometimes not so subtle since Activex objects aren't supported on the Mac.
MS didn't help themselves a couple of versions ago with Excel for Mac 2008 when they arbitrarily decided to remove VBA from the system altogether. You can well imagine how well that went down with Mac clients who happened to have invested in workbooks with macros.
The workbook has only a single sheet. I will mark this solved as I do not want to waste any more of your collective time. I thank protonLeah for his advice on how to avoid using merge cells. I will chalk this up to an anomoly that, for the moment, will remain a mystery. Thanks to all.

I think that to those of us that have responded, this is a challenge, not a waste of time. And to the many potential other members, this may be something they have/will run into as well, so a sollution would help them as well
I dont work on Mac, but may still be able to spot what changed. Can you upload a small (clean) sample of your file?
Richard, Many thanks. I am a musician and composer and use Excel simply for some financial bookkeeping and when I make cue sheets for television programs I have scored. So I am in no way a deep user.
Whatever I did, it does not seem to affect new workbooks. So, rather than continue to use your valuable time, I will close this inquiry. If it happens again, I will put it up here again and then look deeper for a solution.
Many thanks,
Thomas
Okay, Richard and Ford. I will figure out how to up load the file and you can have a go at it. And I do appreciate your interest. I would love to know myself what I did to inadvertently cause this.
Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

So how do I upload the file for you to look at. I know I should probably be blushing but what the hell.....
Got it. Will do.
Did the file upload? Pardon my inexperience.
Thomas
Yup, came through just fine, thanks.
Just to help us, where do you have colors/merging etc that have changed? On my (PC) screen, I see this...

The cells - A1:H54 are an Excel table, you cannot merge cells in a Table.
