Excel 2011 Mac. Entering data in what should be a simple "Average" cell, but seems mysteriously to have morphed into part of an array. Now I can't do anything what that cell. How can I delete this accidental array, please?

Assuming you do not want to have to retry the data, I would try selecting and copying it. Then Paste Special | Values somewhere else as a temporary storage. If that works, select the whole of the array and delete it. You should now be able to copy back some, or all, of the data you stored. Once everything works as you wish, you can delete the temporary copy.
Ideally, make a backup copy before you start on the process.

Thanks for the reply, but how can I determine the total array range so I can select it?
Easiest way would be to select the entire column.
