    Exclamation Data in a column in one row moved to a different row.

    Version 15.33

    I have been building this file for years, but I still consider myself a newbie.
    I haven't been using formulas, filters or anything else except text in a table manner.
    I just discovered that somehow, the data a column in one row has ended up in a different row.

    For example:

    Original data:
    A B C D E F G H I
    Very Weird Problem with Rows.

    Roses Are Red -- 1 Patterson -- 1 C+ - 1 FC --- 1 Horror ---- 1 2014/07 -- 1 2012 -- 1 I liked it, kind of
    Trace ------------ 2 Cornwell --- 2 A --- 2 FC --- 2 Thriller --- 2 2010/10--- 2 2003 -- 2 Compelling
    A Woman ------- 3 Bradford --- 3 C+ - 3 FO --- 3 Supernat - 3 2017/09--- 3 2011 -- 3 Well constructed characters
    Hot Six ---------- 4 Evanovich - 4 B --- 4 FH --- 4 Humor --- 4 2011/05--- 4 2009 -- 4 Crazy
    Tale of Two Cities 5 Dickens --- 5 B+ -- 5 C ---- 5 Classic --- 5 --- ? ------ 5 1972 -- 5 When I finished the book

    Current Data
    Roses Are Red -- 1 Patterson -- 1 C+ -- 1 FC -- 4 Humor ---- 1 2014/07 - 1 2012 -- 1 I liked it, kind of
    Trace ------------ 2 Cornwell --- 5 B+ -- 2 FC -- 3 Supernat - 2 2010/10 -- 2 2003 -- 3 Well constructed characters
    A Woman ------- 3 Bradford --- 3 C+ -- 3 FO -- 5 Classic ---- 5-----? ------ 3 1972 -- 2 Compelling
    Hot Six ---------- 4 Evanovich - 2 A ---- 5 C --- 2 Thriller ---- 4 2011/05 -- 4 2011 -- 4 Crazy
    Tale of Two Cities 5 Dickens --- 4 B ---- 4 FH -- 1 Horror ---- 3 2017/0 --- 5 1972 -- 5 When I finished the book

    See how the data in a column in one row moved to the same column but a different row.
    As far as I could tell, it is random, but sometimes they moved in clusters.
    I have never seen anything like this before and can't image what happened.
    I dread losing data that took so many years to accumulate.
    So, I am hoping someone has encountered this before and found a solution.

    Sincerely,

    Val

    Have you ever applied a sort to the data? If so, did you include all columns?

    Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

    Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.

    Thanks for answering so quickly. A pleasant surprise.

    First, I emphasize I am a newbie with no outside training. It's probably important to note that the file I am using is an excel.txt.

    I have sorted this file countless times with no problem. I do not have to include all the files, just the ones I want to sort.

    I don't understand the rest of your instructions about "desensitize".

    I cannot provide a BEFORE because it doesn't exist. I have a backup with Carbonite, but only the latest version. It's the same as the file on my laptop.

    I meant "include all the fields", not "files"

    Please attach the file here, as per the instructions in post #2.

    Desensitising the data means obfuscating any sensitive data (e.g. real names, numbers, addresses, etc.).

    Re: Data in a column in one row moved to a different row.

    I hope this helps.

    I copied rows from my excel.txt to a sheet.
    I tried to attach the sheet, but could only attach a document, not a sheet.
    If you can bear with me, I'll do it in a new reply.
    Should I attach the workbook xls ? I has over a thousand records.

    In the meantime I copied 2 rows into this reply to illustrate obvious differences.
    Fields I didn't mention are because I don't know if they are right or wrong, although A & B
    seem to be always right.

    The Hobbit is not "men trapped"
    The Yeast Connection is not H, philosophy or Plato

    ______ A _______________ B _____ C __ D _____ E __________ F _____ G ______ H __________ I
    The Hobbit ___________ Tolkien _ B+ _ FF _ suspense ___ 2016/02 _ 1995 _ men trapped _ nothing
    The Yeast connection _ Crook ________ H __ philosophy ___________ 1954 _ Plato _______ no comment

    columns
    A=title, B=author, C=grade, D=Catgy, E=sub-catgy, F=read, G=copyright, H=plot, I=comment

    C = category
    E = eBooks
    F = Fiction
    FC = Crime
    FF = Fantasy
    FH = Horror
    FK = King & Koontz
    FO = Other
    FR = Romance
    FS = Supernatural/Sci-fi zz
    H - History

    Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

    Re: Data in a column in one row moved to a different row.

    This data is not in a table, therefore if you sort the data without selecting ALL columns, then you will get the result you have. However, if you convert the whole lot to a table, then all columns will sort when you sort any of the others.

    What I suspect you have done, maybe once or more than once, is selected columns A and B and sorted them alphabetically or otherwise, and that means that the other columns will appear to have randomised themselves. There is no other way that this can have happened.

    I fear that this is going to have to be a manual fix, unless you can find a copy of the data from before you sorted it, accidentally or otherwise.

    Re: Data in a column in one row moved to a different row.

    I thought, because of the way the data displays, that it was a table.

    In any case, I have been sorting since at least 2003, usually fields D, B, A only.

    I happen to have a backup on my phone from 3-31-17. Spot checking the authors I am sure of,
    this file seems to be accurate from fields A thru E, and probably F and G.
    It's hard to tell, but fields H and I seem mixed up. I don't understand why the first 5 fields,
    and probably the first 7, are intact before before 3-31-17, but not the last 2.

    Anyway, if my previous paragraph is correct, I can drop the last 2 fields and manually
    correct the rest of the data going forward, hopefully using a Word table. Excel seems
    very complicated without training.

    Thanks so much for your help.

    You’re welcome!

    It is easy enough to convert a range of cells in Excel into a fully sortable table.
