    Date Formats

Several spreadsheets I use spontaneously change from number formats to date formats. I have tried everything to make Excel keep the formatting I assign, but when I save, close and re-open, the format changes back to date. Not every time, but most of the time. The "Normal" style reverts back to date. Why does this happen and what can be done to prevent it?

    Re: Date Formats

If the data entry is something like this:

    05/11

then precede it with a single quote when you enter it:

    '05/11

The quote mark won't show in the cell.

    Re: Date Formats

This is a longstanding bug (first appeared with XL2007) with no single definitive cause I'm aware of. It may be related to sharing workbooks, or pivot tables with KPI measures, but it may not. I've never seen an official document that covers every scenario.
