How to create a line graph for revenue and different product categories

    hi,

i am trying to create a graph in Excel / GSheets that allows me to show revenue on the y axis on a monthly time scale (x axis) per product category. I am failing at this and was wondering what needs to be down in order to get it working.

here you will see a screenshot (as exporting to xlsx messes up the setup) and the test data set attached.

I basically want to have the graph to show a line per product category (a category is found in column "Description") depicting its respective accumulated revenue (amount with tax) on a time scale (invoice date). is this not possible?

It's hard to tell exactly what you have and are trying to do from the limited sample data. What I see you describing is, in essence, a pivot table (with dates going down the left column, description across the top, and sum for each category and date in the body of the pivot table) which can then feed into a line chart.

I might ask if you are primarily using Google Sheets and/or how much cross-compatibility you will need between Sheets and Excel, because I don't know how well pivot tables translate between the two platforms. If you are primarily using Sheets and don't really need cross-platform compatibility, then follow Google's instructions for creating a pivot table. https://support.google.com/docs/answ...DDesktop&hl=en If you need cross-platform compatibility, then create the pivot table, save as Excel, then open in Excel to see how much carried over.

actually, you were right. I created a pivot table and could create the desired diagram.

the only thing i had to do, was to reformat the date into text, so that I do not have hundreds of different dates on the x axis in the diagram but a month and year instead.
