Google Sheets Chart to Show Rise & Fall of Balances Against Date Not Working

    Hey there,

I'm new to google sheets and I've got in a bit over my head I think. I've designed a working (until now) website backed up by an embedded google sheets system to update user accounts and account balances. All my boss wanted was a basic chart for each account to show the rise and fall of balances. I went in and just tried to figure out on my own how to do that.. so definitely I may have made some errors in the setup. Anyway.. all seemed to work fine for a few weeks until today when I tried to input new data from the current date.. (or any future date) these changes simply would not be reflected in the linked graphed data as usual. What's bizarre is that if I change the input date to anything before 12/8/21 everything is plotted in the graph fine. As soon as I exceed this date in time it refuses to plot any data. (*Please see attached screen shots for what I mean.) The date is the only entry I am altering so I know it has something to do with that. But god knows what.. EVEN more bizarre is that I have another identical client page set up where everything works perfectly regardless of the date input with the same dates and exact same settings only no issues.. yet 99% of other accounts have the same issue I describe. I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Anyway my boss has been less than forgiving and told me I have 48hrs to figure out how to get the correct dates in there or he'll replace me and find someone else who can make a basic spreadsheet etc.. Maybe I am just doing something stupid but none of it makes any logical sense to me.

**EDIT: Something of note is that when I try to "clear formatting" for the entire "Date" column anything with the dates above 12/8/21 do not return to an original non formatted state and and centred opposite to the other entries... may not be relevant but.. very weird.

Anyway if ANYONE can help at all or give me any clue as to why this hell might be happening I will be forever indebted. I've tried everything.

you mentioned website and client pages... are all the client pages on the same website?

    also:
    * check the time zone of the google sheets,
    * Google Sheets time zone can be changed by clicking **File > Spreadsheet settings**

    * if you are using any App Scripts then make sure they are using the same time zone,
    * App Script's time zone can be changed by using the **Legacy editor** and clicking **File > Project properties** from the menu above the script editor.

    * check the date formatting to make sure they are also set to the same format that is consistent with the time zone of the google sheet

    Hi djmedzy,

I didn't have any trouble recreating a similar chart to yours in the link below. It's pretty hard though to troubleshoot your problem from a screen shot.

Re: Google Sheets Chart to Show Rise & Fall of Balances Against Date Not Working

Firstly I'm sorry about not reading the forum rules and the title. I will be more considerate in future. Been a very stressful few days. Thank you so much for the helpful reply! It was a bit difficult to convey my issue. That was exactly the problem the timezones were wrong. I'm in Australia and it was set to the US. I feel pretty stupid I didn't consider that. It was strange though that the dates wouldn't work for a few days prior not just the day outside of the timezone or maybe I'd have thought to check. I guess it just causes issues in general having it set wrong. In any case it's fixed now and I just need to scramble to get all these client sheets updated in the same way and back to the correct timezone. Unless there is a way to set a few hundred of them all at once I guess I'm going in and doing it manually for each one. But very happy to do that at the moment and have this fixed! Really appreciate the help! Saved my bacon.

    Cheers!

Re: Google Sheets Chart to Show Rise & Fall of Balances Against Date Not Working

the reason for the timezone being an issue between Aus and USA is that USA does date formatting as mm/dd/yy, whereas Aus does dd/mm/yy... so the sheets think you are incrementing months and not days, which is why once it reaches 12 you cant go any further.

in order to prevent the google sheets from changing timezones in the future, you may want to add the following App Script (triggered to suit your purposes) to them:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
for the timezone database as used by Google, just google for joda-time timezones on sourceforge
