Be able to change inputs into a counter without backdating the change

    Hello.

I'm figuring out how to build a financial counter that shows real-time progress towards a goal.

This takes into account earnings versus expenses – including known monthly/annual bills divided into per-minute amounts.

Is there a way I can formulate this so that I can alter/add/remove bills in future without it backdating?

    Many thanks indeed!

    Welcome to the forum.

Not with formulae - you would need VBA. Are you working in the desktop version or online in a browser?

Thank you for a super-fast response!

I've never got into VBA, so that's beyond me at present! I'm using the desktop version. Ideally I'd make this work in Google Sheets so I can easily pull in data to a physical display, but very much trying to figure out what I don't know I don't know at this point...

    Thank you

OK - so if this is a GoogleSheets query, it's in the wrong place - I'll move it.

But the problem will be the same: if you have formulae dependent on data that is subsequently changed or removed, the formulae will respond.

You could do as I do in my own balance sheet workbook and copy paste the previous month's data to values (I have a VBA routine assigned to a button, but you couldn't do that in GoogleSheets). It might have to be a manual adjustment at the end of each month.

It would be easier to advise if you provided a sample mock-up in a workbook of what you have envisaged.

Thank you again! I don't do much spreadsheet work, so I don't know the limitations/capabilities of Excel vs Google Sheets. But thanks for moving this to wherever it should be!

Would it be possible for the formula to generate a fixed value every minute, which then forms the basis for the next minute's calculation? I.e. to lock in the amount to avoid the back-dating issue? Or is that VBA stuff?

    Many thanks indeed

No - that's VBA, and VBA will NOT run in GoogleSheets. It will only run in the desktop version of Excel (not in a browser environment).

A formula cannot spontaneously convert itself into a value.

Okay, thank you. I'll try to think of an alternative approach. Thanks
