Question in conditional formatting Excel Mac 2011

Hello and thanks for reading this.
I know it's a simple question, but can't find the answer by myself.
    Attached a worksheet.

    2013-07-01 conditional formatting.xlsx

I want to copy and paste CF (all the rules for A and B) from A1:A30 and B1:B30 to columns C1:C30 through H1:H30.
I click on the letter A, Cmd C, click on letter C, Cmd V and the whole range becomes green instead of getting the color according to the number in column M.
Can someone point me on the direction, to do it the right way?
Please tell me if something is not clear.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Ted

Re: Question in conditional formatting Excel Mac 2011

i suspect it will be the use of $ in the ranges

youhave $M - so thats should be OK

    but then when you copy

$A$1:$B$30 in the applies to is not moving

if you only want the condition to change the colour in C to H

change the applies to range in the cond format
and it will still be green - because you dont have a number in cell M9

how are you expecting this to work

the item in grid - A to H
do you want to colour code based on the category

if so then you need to have a lookup table for all those items- so it know which numberto use to then colour
which you appear to have done
so i work on a lookup

    EDIT

so i have changed to use a Vlookup and get the number from the list

    Great!
    Thanks etaf.
And if I wanted columns A,C,E & G to be the same color as B,D,F & H, how would I need to modify the Vlookup formula and/or the "applies to range"?
    I appreciate your help!
    Thanks!

I'm sure there's a simple way to apply to those cells - But I'm not getting anything to work correctly at the moment

    try using cf of
    =VLOOKUP(INDEX($A$1:$H$30,ROW($A1),FLOOR(COLUMN(B$1)/2,1)*2),$L$9:$M$193,2,FALSE)=1 or 2 or 3 or......
applied to a1 and copied to rest of cells
