Opening files in Excel 2013 from a folder without opening Excel first

Morning - at least it is here, in darkest Cumberland, England.

I'm 77, been fussing and farting around with Excel for about 20 years. Any progress I have made is down mostly to JW! Switching to new versions of Excel has usually gone quite well. Not so well this time.
