DVD-RW burner problem with Win 7

Problem description: I was burning a DVD using "Nero Kwik Burn" software when in the middle of burning I got an error message "...encountered a problem and process was aborted" and the DVD was ejected. After that the DVD drive does not recognize anything. I.e. the tray works, but e.g. Windows Media Player informs "no disc" whether there is a DVD, CD, CD-R etc. inserted. On checking the control panel's device listing it states that "the device works properly". And yet, it does not work. What might be the problem? I rebooted, no joy.

Addendum: I tried unistalling the device using the device manager and then rebooted. No change. The device manager still lists the device as "working correctly" and when I insert a disc the device's light flashes for some 5 seconds and then dies. Tray again works fine. I checked the wiring, no loose connections.

Is it practical to re-install Win7 on your machine (i.e. you have the Win7 disk and all your device drivers disk(s))?

No, it isn't. I do have back-up disks but somehow I feel this cannot be a Win 7 caused problem as everything else works fine.

Then why not try a system restore...that is easy enough

I did a system restore in my previous computer and that is not a road I'd gladly take, especially as most IT people I have asked about the problem suspect that it is a mechanical drive defect.

Problem solved by replacing the DVD drive with a new one. I.e. it was mechanical defect of the drive as I did not do any system restore etc.
