On my computers the OS view (called the Desktop) occupies the entire screen. Open applications are either minimized or not. If an open application is minimized it appears on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
If an open application is not minimized, it may be maximized. In the maximized state it usually occupies the entire screen with the exception of the taskbar.
If an open application is neither minimized nor maximized, it will usually occupy a rectangular area on the Desktop. The size, shape, and position of the rectangle is under user control.
If an open application does not occupy a rectangular area, it may be hidden, but still open and running (like virus scanners).
