Slow, Lagging and Non Responsive

I am using Office 365 and it is almost impossible to use Excel. For whatever reason, I can open excel and use it for a few minutes and then it starts becoming slow, lagging and non-responsive. It typically take 3 to 5 seconds between each move. It seems like a memory issue, but this does not happen in any other program. I have 32 gig of ram so it should not be an issue.

I removed and reinstalled the program, but is still has not resolved the issue. This happened to me last year and we updated the video driver and it seemed to help, but after a recent windows and Office 365 update it seem to come back with a fury.

Can anyone help me? I need this worked out ASAP since this is one of my primary programs that I use to do business.

Are you working on locally stored files (on your HDD) or from the cloud?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

You might also consider reviewing 'Settings'. I remember similar issues when upgrading to 2013. I don't recall all the settings but 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration' made a difference.

At that time there were also some system settings (Win8) that may not be relevant now ... I have no idea how to access them in Win10 if they are.

A search on the net reveals this is a very common problem.
This search string got a lot of hits. The remedies are varied. "excel slow down after upgrade 365"

This site recommends starting in Clean Boot Mode. A link is provided for how to do this and locate/remove any problem startup applications running behind the scene. It appears to be tedious and time consuming.

This one states that Hey Cortana is the culprit.

This one states Dell Realtek audio drivers are the problem.

That is just a small sampling. So prepare for a "seige".

I'll be following this thread closely. I'm about to upgrade 365 this afternoon. So thanks for posting.

Re: Slow, Lagging and Non Responsive

Few things I did when I moved from 2010 to Office 365.

1. Did full clean install (cleaned registry values as well as all app folders)

2. Turned off Hardware graphic acceleration

3. Turned off all unnecessary animations in Control Panel -> Ease of Access -> Turn off all unnecessary animations (when possible)

4. Enabled multi-threaded calculation (I have 2 core with hyper threading, so I set it to 4).

5. Also turned on multi-threaded processing under Options -> Advanced -> General

And lastly, since I deal with large data sets quite often and use PowerQuery and PowerPivot, I've opted to install 64 bit version.
FYI - To take advantage of 32Gb ram you'll want 64 bit version. 32 bit install will have limit of 4Gb ram usage for Excel instance.

Haven't had issue with slow-down, after above.

@ CK76,

Thanks for that. I couldn't recall system settings or Option steps 4-5.
