Sumif based on part of cell value

Learned people,

I have a column (in an accounting spreadsheet I am building) which contains for example 'Propogation Equipment - Tangible assets' or another example 'Seeds and Plants - Cost of sales'

I would like to be able to sum the totals of each of the right hand parts i.e after the - so Tangible assets and Cost of sales in the aforementioned examples

I'm guessing you knowledgeable folk will have a way as always

You could try this:

=SUMIF(A:A,"*Tangible assets",C:C)

assuming column A contains the descriptions, and column C contains the items to sum.
