Text over three rows

My spreadsheet is organised into sets of three rows, with the middle row in each set filled with a colour. I want to enter text into the middle row, but in such a way that the "tall" letters such as d,f,l,and all upper-case letters extend up into the upper row, while letters with a "tail" such as g, y, p extend down into the lowest row. Letters such as a, c, v, x etc will all be fully contained in the middle row.

Is this possible If so, how?

Alternatively, is there a way in which I can combine (merge?) my three rows into one and still retain the coloured strip across the middle?

No, you cannot let letters spill over into other cells.

what does seem to work is if you have a textbox over a range of cells that you can create the effect, but the text wont be in the middle row it will be in the textbox

Probably not. This situation arose while I was working on an Excel project so I thought I'd look into it. But I think I'll have to try something else now.
