Drop down list to show arrow and not wingdings characher

Hello All,

I have googled around and watched YoiuTube videos to try and resolve my small problem, I car create arrows easily in symbols but when I do data validation for a list I see the windgings character and not the arrows, I have tired formatting the cell but still no good?


Can you tell me what I am doing wrong please as it's driving me a little nuts.
