searching efficiently in a large database

I have a large database (8000 + entries with multiple fields). The details are of individuals supported by our service. The data came from a previous database which closed and the info we have is poorly organised, although it is in categories. I need to be able to search this data to find entries for individuals based on matching their name and date of birth. I have used 'filter' to produce a table of all individuals with a particular date of birth, which is helpful, but I'd rather be able to search using name and date of birth which would make finding the entry for a specific individual much easier. Totally failing to find out how to search for text in this context. Is it possible to find a name i.e. 'Robertson' (and possible partial variations of this) and then produce a table with all instances of entries for this name in the data and combine this with the date of birth? Can anyone point me to which function might help me? I'm largely a self taught user and can usually find a formula I can apply on-line or via Youtube tutorials but completely failing with this.

    Hi,

Sorry. I did read the yellow banner. This data is highly confidential and it would not be appropriate to post any of it on an open forum.

Nobody is asking you to post confidential data. What we want is a sample of dummy data that is representative of your actual data. We can then see your layout and structure. Without understanding your specific needs, it is difficult to provide a solvable solution. Which columns, what does the data look like. Help us to help you.
