    Rarefaction curve formula

Please can anyone advise as to whether I can use excel to produce a rarefaction curve for ecological data? I have a spreadsheet of presence/absence for around 15 different species. Thanks

    I don't see why not.

Generating the data given the random element might need the use of a scatter plot chart using a regression function, or perhaps looping macro. However upload the workbook for a more considered response.

    Sounds like an interesting exercise.

Many thanks for your positive response. I am uploading what I have done so far - two species accumulation curves for 2 sets of data. Ultimately I could probably use these, but would reaaly like to convert them to proper rarefaction curves. Thanks

Thanks Richard - I think I have attached a spreadsheet in a different reply.

Here's a link to an older post which is relevant. I'm guessing the OP can't provide the link.

Hi Trevor - thanks for the link. I found that post originally - and added to the thread - but got reprimanded for doing so. They had indeed seemed to solve that person's problem - however I couldn't find a formula. Thanks for your help. I think I'm going to stick with species accumulation curves - much easier - but not statistically as valid.

katiespirations' solution used VBA sub procedures rather than spreadsheet formulas. I did not have any trouble opening the VBA code editor from that file. I did not try to understand the algorithm that was used, but I could see that the code was there.

What difficulty are you having finding the code in the old file? to open the VBE, press alt-F11, or find the Visual Basic button on the Developer tab of the ribbon. If the Developer tab is not present on your ribbon, find the "customize ribbon" command and make sure that "show developer tab" is checked.

It uses four almost identical macros rather than any formula.

You might find that editing them to reflect your layout they'll give you what you want.
