    Formula to Work Out How Many Pre-Cut Lengths I Need for a Job

    Hi all, new to this forum and looking for a little bit of help.

    I've measured all my skirtings and facings for my flat and got a total of what length I require, however I'm trying to get as much out as a 4.4M length as possible without too much waste.

    So e.g. I require 52.85M of skirting board which equates to 13 lengths & I require 74M of facings which equates to 17 lengths.

    I'm looking for a formula or help in putting all my individual measurements into a 4.4M length, so basically a function to use all the data from certain cells and add them together to get as close to 4.4M or 4400 as the cells are in mm.

    I can attach spreadsheet if required and any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Administrative Note:

    Welcome to the forum.

    There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook.

    A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative data that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.

    We would very much like to help you with your query, however the thread title does not really convey what your request is about. Tell us what you are trying to do, not how you think it should be done.

    Please take a moment to amend your thread title. Make sure that the title properly explains your request. Your title should be explicit and not be generic (this includes function names used without an indication of what you are trying to achieve).

    Please see Forum Rule #1 about proper thread titles and adjust accordingly. To edit the thread title, open the original post to edit and then click on Go Advanced (bottom right) to access the area where you can edit your title.

    (Note: this change is not optional. As you are new here, I have done it for you this time.)

    Re: Formula to Work Out How Many Pre-Cut Lengths I Need for a Job

    Here is a possibility borrowed from a VBA based solution that PietBom worked up for getting combinations of truck loads.
    I substituted the lengths that needed to be cut for the skirting into column F and then selected the Optimize Load Combi's button (cell L1) to run the macro and it seemed to work well.
    I have reset the cut lengths so that you can see how this works for yourself by selecting said button.
    Note that I feel the measurements are actually in CM, hence I put the value 440 into cell J1.
    I imagine that you could replace the values in column F with the facings lengths, sorted or unsorted, to get the cuts made per board for them.
    I can't help much as my knowledge of VBA is extremely limited, however I will alert PietBom that you may need help.

    @JeteMC,
    Thanks for suggesting my tool for optimizing best possible combinations of cutting lengths or loading truck or whatever...
    @KieranAtlas,
    It needed just a few modifications to make it work for your case. See attachment.....
