Re: how to recover a large pst file?

I suggest that a better hunting ground for this request be the Microsoft Community. People there have been helpful with some of my issues. I am almost certain that there will be a number of posts on recovering PST files, but I will bet that the first suggestion will be "use your backup."
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

If Outlook is running, quit the program.
Double-click the Scanpst.exe, located in the Drive: \ Program Files \ Microsoft Office \ OFFICE12.
In the Enter the name of the file to check, enter the file name with the extension PST or OST, you want to check, or click the Browse button to find it.
To specify the scan settings, click the Settings button and select the desired option.
    Click the Start button.
If errors are detected by the scan is complete you will be prompted to start the process of correcting errors.
During the restore process creates a backup file. To change the default name or location of this file, enter a new name in the Name field of the backup file, or click Browse to locate the file.
    Click the Restore button.
Start Outlook, using the profile that contains the recovered PST-file.
From the Go menu, click Folder List.

In the Folder List displays a folder named Recovered Personal Folders, which are folders that exist in the default Outlook folder or Lost and Found. Recovered folders generally empty, as they represent the newly created PST-file. Lost and Found folder contains folders and items that have been restored using recovery tools "Inbox". Items that are missing from the Lost and Found can not be recovered.
If you see a Recovered Personal Folders folder, you can create a new PST-file, and then drag in items from the Lost and Found folder. After moving all the elements can be removed from the profile file Recovered Personal Folders (PST-file) containing the Lost and Found folder.

Another may be such that pst file to become corrupted. if you have ost file, you can try to recover information from it. But you will need to convert this ost into pst file. This will help you this program. And then repeat all the steps described above.
I once downloaded in download.cnet.com one tool convert ost to pst and it often helps.

    Hi,stiansolberg

The Outlook PST file format is very complex. It starts with a file header containing the meta information of the whole file, followed by several parts containing the actual data. You can find more detailed information about the Outlook PST file format by searching on Google with the keyword “Outlook PST file format”. If the file header containing the meta information is corrupt, or any follow-up parts are damaged or corrupted, then you will not be able to open the file correctly with Outlook. In such a case, the first step is to try to use the built-in repair or recovery function in the Outlook, to see if it can repair or recover corrupted Outlook PST file for you. If not, then you need to resort to a third-party fix Outlook tool to scan the corrupted file and retrieve all recoverable data for you. It is also possible to find a data recovery expert or company to do the task, but in most of the cases, they will also use a third-party tool to do the recovery for you.

The main difference between using the software by yourself and by a third-party service company is:

    (1) The company is familiar with the data recovery industry so he knows which software is the best one. While you need to search and compare the software online by yourself, which is time-consuming.

    (2) The company purchases the software for multiple usages, while you purchase the software for one-time usage only. So normally the service fee may be cheaper than the license fee for the software.

    (3) DIY will keep your data confidential while do the recovery via a company may cause data breach.

If you want to perform a DIY recovery, then you can try the following methods:

First, the Microsoft offical tool scanpst, also called Inbox Repair Tool, can repair the PST file, you can refer the following articles:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/o...010075831.aspx
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272227
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/287497

If the above method does not work, then you can try DataNumen Outlook Repair at:

    https://www.datanumen.com/outlook-repair/

I have used the tool in the past and it helps recovering some valuable data for me. The tool has a free demo so that you can try to see if it works on your file or not before you buy.

Hope this will help. Good Luck!
