    conditional formatting with dates

    hello, i have a spreadsheet with two columns both with dates formatted (MM/DD/YYYY). i want to highlight the cells in which the date in the second column occurs before the date in the previous column. since i am an excel novice i cannot seem to find the right formula to make this happen. any help would be much appreciated. thanks.

    Hi cjl22,

    Highlight the first cell you want to add the conditonal formatting to. Add a new conditional formatting rule, and click the 'based on a formula' option at the bottom of all the options. Enter:
    [code]
    =SECOND COLUMN CELL REFERENCE < FIRST COLUMN CELL REFERENCE

    You can add your own custom format to it. This should now work for this cell. At the top left of the page under the home tab, next to paste, click the formatting painter and click and drag over the other cells you want to format.
